Ugly Furniture: Practicality Isn’t an Excuse for Whoever Made These Non-Aesthetic Pieces

We’ve seen many fashion and beauty trends that don’t make sense to us, but we jump on them because everyone else is. Well, some furniture manufacturers have also had their share of questionable designs in the world of furniture. Looking at these ugly pieces of furniture, we wonder if they were made to be sold or ‘just because.’ Here are five ugly couches and chairs to help you see what we mean by ‘unaesthetic.’

Lips that make you cringe

We use the term ‘sexy lips’ a lot because someone’s lips can attract us even before they speak a word. The designer of this chair probably wanted to create Marilyn Monroe’s sexy lips and have a luscious place to sit.

Little did they know that their foam-covered red lips would look creepy. Designed by Studio 65 for Gufram in 1986, The Marilyn sofa should be a museum exhibition, not a piece of household furniture.

The perfect torture chair

While moving away from conventional methods can be rewarding and beautiful, it could be a colossal failure. Shifting away from regular wooden home furniture didn’t work so well for this manufacturer.

Made of white fiberglass-reinforced plastic and coated with gel, these tooth-like chairs, called The Molar Group, are a total waste of materials. You can effectively threaten a troublesome kid with the chair because who wouldn’t be freaked out to sit on such large teeth?

Creativity has a limit

Have you ever had a creative idea in your head that you didn’t act out because you knew it would be a disaster? Right. It seems the designer of this chair didn’t think twice before birthing his non-aesthetically pleasing idea.

Called the Nobody’s Perfect chair, this chair shows how imperfect and horrible a simple piece of furniture can look. On a closer look, the chair looks like those slides teachers show students in science classes; it’s like one is seeing the brain, intestines, and all. Yuck!

Can someone please tow them to the hospital?

Picking the ugliest one of these two chairs is a real dilemma. Made from corrugated cardboard in 1987 for Vitra, the Big Beaver armchair looks even too ugly to be a pet’s house.

As for the Queen Anne chair, which was designed in 1979 for Knoll, its fat legs and flowery design make it look like an artifact. Just like shapeless hospital wear, both chairs belong in the hospital.

Is it so hard to stay under one category?

Some creative products are so hyped today because they don’t belong to just one category. However, some ‘hybrid’ products are just nothing to write home about- this chair is one of them.

Of course, if we wanted a car seat, we’d sit in the car, and we’d sit on the sofa if we wanted a home chair. This design, which combines a car seat with two metal rods, is totally confusing. Where would one’s legs be? On the horizontal rod? Talk about sitting like a monkey.
